This lovely ginger is very easy to grow and will flower most of the year but most heavily in hot humid weather. The clumps will grow to about 4 feet on average. The bright red heads of bracts create a very nice contrast to deep green, shiny foliage that is spirally arranged up and down the stems. The true flowers, which emerge from the red cone are yellow to orange and tend to emerge one flower at a time, creating a curious effect in the garden.
Red button ginger, like many gingers, prefers partial shade. Too much direct sun burns the foliage but too much shade will prohibit flowering. Filtered light is ideal. Watering requirements are average. The plants prefer rich, moist but well-drained soil. Fertilization should be done during the spring and summer.
