Heliconia 'Golden Torch' is an extremely dependable bloomer. It grows to approximately 4-5' tall and has blooms of bright yellow against deep green foliage. The flowers are excellent for cut flower bouquets and arrangements. The leaves are bold and tropical, resembling canna or banana foliage, both of which are distant relatives. 'Golden Torch' will begin blooming in mid to late spring in South Florida and will continue as long as weather is hot and humid.
Heliconias are native to tropical America, and while a few can be found in seasonally dry locations, most come from moist and wet regions and need regular watering during the growing season, a little less during winter when plants slow down their growth. Growing from rhizomes, they have erect shoots, each composed of a stem and leaves; flowering occurs on mature shoots only, so never prune or trim a heliconia stem until after it has flowered. Heliconias are heavy feeders, and need rich soil. They dislike direct sun but will cease to bloom in heavy shade. Dappled light shade from overhead trees is ideal.
