Also called pineapple ginger, Indonesian wax ginger is native to tropical forests from Indonesia to northern Australia. It is a rhizomatous plant that typically grows to 6-8’ tall. Its claim to fame are the waxy, pine cone-like, deep red inflorescences (to 8-12” tall) which have small yellow flowers emerging from within each bract. Each inflorescence appears on top of a thick, leafless, bamboo-like stalk that rises up from the ground. The flowers present a bizarre and dramatic show in the landscape, almost resembling a series of waxy red beehives or upside down pineapples. In tropical to semi-tropical areas such as South Florida, this plant blooms throughout the year but most heavily in hot humid weather.
Indonesian wax ginger prefers partial to full shade, a rich, moist, organic soil that is also well-drained, and regular applications of organic fertilizer during the growing season for best flower production. The flowers are extremely long lasting and excellent for cut flower bouquets and arrangements.
