Jewel pagoda ginger is another shrubby perennial ginger that has a mass of arched foliage growing up to 5-6' tall and with a smaller spread. The plain green leaves are rather pedestrian. Its impact in the garden comes from the very tall sculptured cone-shaped flowers; like many other ginger relatives, these are produced on bare flowerstalks that arise directly from the ground, beneath the mass of foliage. In this case, the cones are lime green, edged in ruby red; the red coloration increases as the inflorescence enlarges and matures. Within each red bract is the true flower, which is pale lavender spotted with violet.
Jewel pagoda ginger prefers partial shade, rich organic soil that is moist but well-drained, and regular applications of organic fertilizer during the growing season. As with other ginger relatives, the flowers are long lasting and exquisite for cutting.
