Beehive ginger is a native of Thailand and produces spectacular cone shaped inflorescences. They are dramatically shaded with a color gradient from bright yellow to orange and red, the red coloration increasing as the flowers enlarge and mature. The cones may be up to 12" tall ands grow on short spikes from the base of the plant. In tropical areas the plant will grow all year around but in cooler climates goes dormant in winter.
Beehive ginger does best planted in partial shade; too much full sun will burn the plant, but deep shade will inhibit flowering. The soil should be well drained and moist. If provided with daily irrigation, this ginger will tolerate full sun and grow well, although the foliage will crisp and burn around the edges.
