This very rare palm tree is native to the Mauritius and Reunion Islands and is nearly extinct in the wild due to the harvesting of the edible part. Younger specimens of the Barbel palm tree can be distinguished by striking red leaf sheaves bearing long, sharp spines found at the top of the trunk. It is slow-growing both in the wild and in garden settings.
Barbel palm needs full sun and a well-drained soil for best growth and performance but it is otherwise a fairly "unfussy" plant, although it luxuriates with rich soil and regular fertilizer. It is adaptable to South Florida climates that experience a wet summer and dry winter, but supplemental irrigation during dry winter weather is recommended.
