The most beautiful of the Archontophoenix palms, but is also the least sun tolerant of the species. As it matures, it does better in the sun. It is absolutely gorgeous in the tropics where the crownshaft is a gorgeous light violet-grey to rich purple color. Leaves have a whitish underside and trunks are more ringed than the other members of this genus.
As a seedling this is a robust plant. However, it is a bit slower growing and even less tolerant of drought -- regular watering is essential with this species. None of the Archontophoenix species move well, especially as older plants. Plant this palm in its permanent location in the landscape.
In areas of high humidity, all Archontophoenix species tolerate full sun. However, they grow best and look best when planted in partial shade. Areas that are inland must plant this palm in either part day sun or morning light. Archontophoenix do poorly in desert areas (unless in shade) and cannot tolerate direct sun.
Archontophoenix palms appreciate rich soil with good drainage. Supplementing the soil with organic material such as mulch, fir or redwood shavings or leaf matter is essential. They are also "thirsty" palms and need adequate water, which may mean daily watering during seasonal dry weather. A slow-release fertilizer with an N/P/K ratio of 3:1:3 is recommended.
