Not commonly grown in the United States, betel nut palm originates in the South Pacific and features a single, slender trunk topped with a crown of small, densely set, rigidly curved leaves. It makes a handsome specimen due to the attractive ringed trunk and smooth green crownshaft. The effect in the landscape is similar to a Christmas palm (Adonidia merrillii) but much more exotic.
The yellow "nuts" produced by the tree are chewed like tobacco in many parts of tropical Asia, where they can act as a stimulant. The effect of chewing the nuts is relatively mild, and could be compared to that of drinking a cup of coffee. Prolonged chewing over many years has been linked to throat cancer.
This is a relatively easy-to-grow palm for South Florida, as long as it is given plenty of water during dry winter weather. It responds well to a slow-release palm fertilizer and will stay a deep emerald green all the time. Partial shade is best, although it will tolerate full sun. It is not picky about soil but does best in well-drained, acidic, organic soils kept moist.
Betel nut palm is very ornamental in every aspect, as well as self-cleaning and relatively fast-growing. Don't hesitate to give this fun palm a try!
