This is an extremely colorful and attractive palm with a crownshaft that varies in color from green to deep watermelon pink, and small flowers in a variety of purples, reds and yellows. The leaves are dark green and variable in width, reminiscent of solitaire palm (Ptychosperma elegans) foliage. The seeds are profuse, large and reminiscent of betel nut palm (Areca catechu), a close relative.
Although gorgeous, the pink lady palm is extremely cold-sensitive, even in South Florida. Any temperatures below 45 degrees F may seriously injure or kill the plant. For this reason it is best grown in a container that can be moved to a heated greenhouse or garage in the event of cold winter weather. For those willing to try growing it in the ground, select an extremely protected site with lots of reflected heat from walls or other surfaces, and give it rich, well-drained soil and regular watering.
