Native to Laos and Thailand, this is the most beautiful of all the fishtail (Caryota) palms, as well as the most massive. In the wild this palm can reach a height of over 100 feet, and the trunk can be 3-4' in diameter. In cultivation, 40-50' is a more realistic height. The evenly spaced, gigantic leaves are made up of hundreds of tiny leaflets, formally arranged, which creates a unique geometrical effect in the landscape. Each leaf may be up to 18' long and 10' wide on mature specimens. The overall effect is that of a giant tree fern.
The fishtail (Caryota) palms in general are easy-to-grow in humid tropical or subtropical climates, needing only well-drained soil and full sun. They are not salt-tolerant and should not be used in seaside gardens. All fishtail palms are monocarpic, which means they will die immediately after flowering and fruiting occurs, although this often takes 20 years or more. Another characteristic of Caryota palms is their fruits are covered in calcium oxylate crystals. These oxylates are not only toxic to ingest, but a toxic skin irritant as well. The fruits should never be touched with bare skin, and preferably cut off as soon as they begin to form. Children and pets should be kept away from these dangerous fruits.
