This exotic palm has many different common names: flamethrower palm, red leaf palm, red feather palm, and blushing palm among others! The various names refer to the red colored new leaves that emerge among the otherwise dark green fronds that are similar to solitaire palm foliage. From a distance it appears that the tree is throwing out a flaming leaf, hence the name "flamethrower palm." The red coloration is variable, ranging from brick red to a fairly bright crimson. It will otherwise form a single-stemmed tree slowly growing 10-20' tall with a 7-8' leaf spread.
Flamethrower palm is probably the best of all the Chambeyronia palms for the USA. It is not a fast grower but otherwise relatively easy and hardy. It enjoys the hot humid weather found in South Florida but dislikes blazing hot inland sun, so is best grown in partial shade. It is not salt tolerant. It does best in moist, well-drained soil with regular irrigation. A generic palm fertilizer applied 2-3x a year is enough to keep flamethrower palm happy and healthy.
