This beautiful palm embodies all the romance of the tropics, but is also of great economic value: it is the most extensively grown and consumed nut in the world, and one of the most important crops for many tropical countries, where it provides food, fuel, oil, timber, fiber, and countless other human necessities.
Coconut palm is variable in size but in South Florida will reach anywhere form 20-50' tall at maturity. The gracefully curved, gray trunks have handsome rings caused by old leaves that have fallen off. The trunk is topped by a crown of pinnately compound yellow-green leaves that flutter and rustle in the wind. The coconuts ripen sporadically throughout the year.
In humid tropical climates, coconut palm is simple and easy to grow: as long as the soil is well-drained, it is adaptable to anything from good garden soil to almost pure sand. As a coastal species it is highly salt tolerant. The only steadfast requirement is full sun: the tree does not tolerate shade very well. Coconut palm needs high humidity to thrive and for that reason is a poor choice for dry desert climates such as Southern California and the American Southwest, where the combination of dry air and cold nighttime temperatures inevitably kill the trees.
