The old man palm is named because of its stunning trunk. Like most Coccothrinax species, the actual trunk itself is slender, only 6-8" in diameter, but on this species it appears much larger and thicker because it is covered with thick layer of grayish white, wool-like fibers. The foliage is handsome and typical of the Coccothrinax, large fan-shaped leaves that are glossy emerald green on top and silvery white beneath, creating an exciting bicolor effect in the landscape. The eccentric trunk characteristic makes it best suited as a single specimen in the landscape, or perhaps in small groups of three as a corner accent.
Coccothrinax palms are native to areas of the Caribbean that experience the same humid wet summers and dry winters as South Florida, making them perfectly adapted for landscape cultivation in South Florida. As a group they are slow-growing but also extremely low-maintenance, drought tolerant, salt tolerant, and not picky as to soil type, although they grow faster and more lush if given rich soil and regular watering. Their only requirement is full sun, but they can tolerate partial shade quite well.
