One of the most exciting novelties from Cuba, the 'Azul' thatch palm exhibits a truly magnificent leaf color: a dense, shiny white silver below and a steely blue, waxy silver above. It easily rivals the color of the great silver Bismarckia palm, and is one of the few palms with a silver/blue leaf that will grow well in the humid tropics -- most blue-leaved palms only do well in dry desert climates. The trunk is highly ornamental as well, with a geometric layering of burlap-like leaf fibers up and down most of the trunk. These traits, combined with the traditional Coccothrinax traits (handsome fan-shaped leaves and a graceful habit of growth) make this palm a highly desirable specialty item for the garden. This palm demands full sun but is otherwise relatively easy to grow.
Coccothrinax palms are native to areas of the Caribbean that experience the same humid wet summers and dry winters as South Florida, making them perfectly adapted for landscape cultivation in South Florida. As a group they are slow-growing but also extremely low-maintenance, drought tolerant, salt tolerant, and not picky as to soil type, although they grow faster and more lush if given rich soil and regular watering. Their only requirement is full sun, but they can tolerate partial shade quite well.
