Related to the attractive but overused areca palm (Dypsis lutescens), the cabada palm (D. cabadae) is larger and has a very attractive trunk, but unfortunately is not grown as extensively as areca palm. The cabada palm grows taller than the areca, up to 30' in height, and has a clustering habit. Each stem holds up to 10 pinnately shaped, deep green leaves up to 8' in length. Although the cabada palm's leaves arch like those of the areca palm, they are held a bit more stiffly to the trunk, giving the cabada palm a very stately and majestic appearance.
The trunk is beautiful and what really sets this palm apart. The trunk has a smooth green appearance with prominent whitish grey rings, similar to bamboo. This makes a very attractive architectural accent in a landscape.
Cabada palm should definitely be grown more than it currently is: as a landscape plant it is beautiful, unique, low-maintenance and almost foolproof in terms of ease of cultivation. Cabada palm is adaptable to a wide range of soils, light and fertility. It has moderate salt tolerance. Plant this palm in full sun to light shade. For fastest growth, keep the soil moist; however, cabada palm is moderately drought tolerant and can survive small periods of seasonal drought without issue.
