The African oil palm is, after the coconut, the most important commercially exploited palm species. Commercial oils are extracted from both the fruit and the seed. The plant forms a rather large, hefty tree with a thick trunk and immense, plume-like leaves up to 12' long. It makes a rather handsome tree but due to its size and heft, needs plenty of room in the landscape.
African oil palm is a highly adaptable species that can doctorate a range of soil types. It is moderately drought tolerant once established. Best growth comes in rich, well-drained soil with regular watering. It needs full sun. Give it plenty of space in the landscape as it grows quite large in time.
