Native to Lord Howe Island in the South Pacific, kentia palm is highly prized for its elegant fronds and slender trunk. Kentia palm has a canopy of about three dozen gracefully drooping leaves which produce an airy and poised look. The leaflets are like fingers that reach downward in a graceful fashion. The foliage color is dark green on top and a lighter green on the bottom. The plant can grow up to 30' tall with a 10' canopy spread, but 10-20' is a more realistic height in South Florida.
As an outdoor landscape plant, kentia palms grow best in partial to full shade, tolerating full sun only after they are fully mature. Even then the foliage tends to bleach out in full sunlight, so a partial or fully shaded exposure at all times is best. As an interior houseplant kentia is naturally well-adapted to low-lit areas, owing to its preference for shade in the wild.
This palm is only moderately drought tolerant, and should be watered before the soil completely dries. Indoor, potted kentias should not be over-watered. They may contract the fungus Phytophthora, if over-watered. In fact, over watering, and the associated plant weakening, is considered the #1 enemy of this plant. Kentias are not salt-tolerant.
