This short, stout little palm, resembling a Dr. Seuss creation, will grow slowly to a height of 10-12' in the landscape, although plants in the 4-8' tall range are much more commonly seen. The solitary trunk is oddly swollen at the base, tapering up to a narrow bottle-neck-like crownshaft, and looks as if it were cast in smooth grey concrete. The rounded, bulging trunk in young specimens gradually elongates as the palm matures. A small crown consisting of 4 to 8 stiff pinnate leaves sits atop the trunk; the upwardly arching leaves are a glossy bright green with reddish shading.
Bottle palm is very well-adapted and easy to grow in South Florida. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Although the swollen trunk looks as if its stores water, bottle palm is only moderately drought tolerant and actually prefers regular watering for best appearance. In South Florida it is particularly susceptible to potassium deficiency, so it is a good idea to feed this palm 2-3 times per year.
