This shade loving, shrubby palm works best as an understory specimen plant where it can get the protection that it needs and be observed up close. It sports striking, deep green, glossy, diamond shaped fronds that are pleated and ribbed, attaining lengths of 5-10', and which emerge directly from the soil on a tiny trunk. The rosette of foliage looks like a giant green lily in profile, the leaves perfectly arched and curved as if posing for a photo.
Joey palm requires high humidity, extremely well drained, rich, moist soil, and protection from strong wind, which will dry and tatter the foliage. Above all else it needs lots of shade -- this is definitely not a plant to use in a sunny or even partially sunny garden. Site this plant on the north side of a building, or beneath the canopy of a large, dense overstory tree such as live oak. Be careful not to overwater, as this will cause the plant to rot and die.
