This beautiful thatch palm is also a Florida native, and perfectly adapted to growing conditions in South Florida. It is a small, thornless fan palm with deeply split leaves that have a whitish, silvery coloration on the undersides and deep kelly green on the reverse. Wind blowing the leaves creates a lovely, two-tone, rippling color effect in the landscape. Key thatch palm is a slow grower that will gradually build up to 8-12' in height. Because of its slow growth, it is best used as a specimen or accent shrub in the landscape, either singly or in small groups.
Key thatch palm is perfectly adapted to South Florida: It tolerates sandy soil, dry soil, alkaline soil, limestone-riddled soil, and can tolerate salt spray and other coastal conditions. It luxuriates on better conditions however, and the slow growth can be sped up somewhat by giving the plant rich, moist but well-drained garden soil. Full sun is best. It is extremely drought tolerant once established but also tolerates high humidity.
