Spiny licuala is prized for its attractive, segmented, circular leads, which are quite large but much smaller than other licuala species. Unlike other licualas, spiny licuala is also a clumping palm rather than single-stemmed. The clumping habit and spiny leafstalks make this plant great for use as a hedge or barrier plant. It also makes a fine specimen or accent. Spiny licuala is the most sun-tolerant of the licuala palms, but as with other licualas, it does best in partial to full shade. The more sun they are exposed to, the more water they require.
In general, licuala palms are rainforest understory plants that require lots of shade and rich, constantly moist but very well-drained soil to do well. They are not sun-tolerant palms and direct sun will scorch the leaves, so be sure to site a licuala palm under a shade tree or on the north side of a wall or building. These palms do best in rich organic soil with regular fertilization. As a group they are spiny, so be sure to use sturdy leather gloves when handling these palms.
