This beautiful and unusual palm grows in huge clumps that can make a striking statement in the landscape. The Senegal date palm is variable in shape and form but tends to grow as clumps composed of multiple stems reaching 25' in height; the spread is largely dependent on how many trunks are allowed to persist within the clump. The relatively slender stems are covered with brown fiber and tend to curve away from the center of the clump in graceful arcs. They are topped by crowns of dark green to yellow green fronds. Senegal date palm is most often used as large specimen shrub in the landscape.
Senegal date palm does better in the humid climate of South Florida than the Canary Island date palm. It prefers bright, sunny locations. It is very drought tolerant but looks more attractive and grows faster if periodically watered.
Like other Phoenix palms, the leaf stem is armored with vicious needles near the trunk. Because of the dangerous thorns, this is not a palm to use near an entrance or other high traffic areas where they might pose a hazard.
