The thin trunks of this delightful little fan palm can reach 10' in height; the plants sucker to form sizable clumps of stems. These trunks are covered with interesting leaf scar patterns and are wrapped with mats of brown fiber. Shiny emerald green leaves are deeply divided into 1" strap-like segments and are held erect on 12" to 18" stems. It is one of the most fine-textured of the fan palms for use in gardens or landscapes. The dense growth and suckering habit make lady palm useful as a hedge or screening plant. It also makes a good accent palm for small intimate garden nooks if the clumps are thinned down to 3-5 main stems of varying heights.
Lady palm is native to warm forests of Southeast China. As an understory plant it is naturally adapted to shade, and prefers shady environments in the landscape, so plant this palm in partial or (preferably) full shade for best leaf color. Plants grown in direct sun tend to fade to yellow green and the leaf tips will burn in hot weather. Lady palm is adaptable to most soils but makes its best growth in rich organic soils that are well-drained. Maintain adequate moisture for best appearance. This palm can survive periods of drought once established.
