Truly an aristocrat of the plant kingdom, this palm is a South Florida icon and makes a memorable impression wherever it is grown. Massive and symmetrical, with a smoothly sculpted trunk, the royal palm grows up to 40 or 50' in the landscape and is the most massive palm native to South Florida. It has immense, foxtail-like pinnate leaves that are a rich deep green and up to 10' long. The overall leaf canopy will have anywhere from 15-20 leaves at a time. The crownshaft is a bright spring green that contrasts handsomely with the smooth, gray, column-like trunk.
The trunk of this species is swollen at the base. It constricts about halfway up and then bulges again just below the crownshaft, creating a dramatic "hourglass" profile. The trunk may be up to 24" in diameter on mature specimens. Because of the massive trunk and large overall size of the mature plant, this palm is best used in large landscapes where it will not be out of scale to the rest of its surroundings. Because of its symmetry, it works very well in formal plantings and is commonly used as a street tree, to flank a grand entrance, or to line a large driveway.
The royal palm is native to freshwater swamps in the Florida Everglades. As such, it is a water lover and needs to be watered regularly in a garden or landscape setting. Plants will survive drought, but drought conditions typically result in "penciling," whereby the trunk becomes skinny and distorted from lack of water. Royal palm is excellent for use in low, wet areas where it can get all the moisture it wants and should definitely be part of any native wetland plantings. Plants tolerate flooding very well, naturally.
Other than its high water needs, this plant is an easy to grow South Florida native. It does best in full sun but is not picky about soil conditions, and it handles heat and humidity without issue. It is not very salt-tolerant due to its preference for freshwater swamps.
