The arikury palm is a lovely, underused plant that can be tucked comfortably into a spot by the entry for a tropical welcome. Its fronds are long for such a short palm - about 4 to 6 feet in length -- but because they grow in an upright, vase-shaped fashion, they rarely extend out more than a 3' radius. The leaf color is deep dark green. It will eventually mature around 15' in height, but 8-10' is a more realistic landscape size.
One of the most unique things about this palm is its trunk. The old feaf bases, or "boots" as they are affectionately called, cling to the trunk form a textured spiral pattern up and down the stem. The effect is as if the trunk of this palm was beautifully decoupaged with small rectangular twigs. The trunk feature alone makes this palm worth growing. Arikury palm makes an ideal stand-alone specimen or group planting for small yards.
Like many slow-growers, arikury palms are low-maintenance plants. Though not considered self-cleaning, the arikury rarely requires trimming of spent fronds, which usually fall off by themselves. It is native to dry areas of Brazil and as such is a drought-tolerant palm. It does well with regular irrigation, but will not tolerate permanently wet soils. It does very well in partial shade but tolerates full sun locations.
Arikury palm leaves have small, sharp teeth along the base, so use caution when handling this plant.
