This unusual plant is native to the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. It makes a magnificent garden palm with large, wide, mostly unsplit leaves and stilt roots, which are always present. It is a rapid grower in hot humid climates.
Please note that there are long, sharp, needle-like black spines that grow along the trunk and petioles of this palm. Care should be used whenever handling it. Although lovely, this is definitely not a plant to use near an entrance or other area of pedestrian traffic where the dangerous spines could pose an injury hazard.
Seychelles stilt palm prefers deep, moist, rich, well-drained soils liberally amended with organic matter. Incorporate a good quantity of organic compost in the hole prior to planting. As a forest understory plant, it does best in partial shade or filtered light. Older plants can tolerate full sun better than young plants. This is not a drought-tolerant species.
