A conversation piece in the garden, zombie palm is native to Cuba. It is named because of the sharp spines that grow on the trunk, which according to Caribbean folklore were used as voodoo doll needles. The needles are beautifully arranged in zigzagging rings up and down the trunk. Aside from the needles, zombie palm resembles a thatch palm in that it is a small, slow-growing fan palm with a slender trunk and handsome green leaves. The leaf tips droop slightly, giving them a graceful elegance. Zombie palm tends to sucker into a multi-stemmed shrub. Because of the sharp needles and suckering habit, this palm is best used in a location that has adequate space and is not adjacent to pedestrian traffic areas.
Zombie palm is a species very well adapted to South Florida growing conditions: it handles heat, humidity, drought and poor soils without any issue whatsoever. It is also very salt tolerant and can be used for seaside gardens. It luxuriates with better conditions, however, and its slow growth can be sped up somewhat by giving it rich soil and regular watering. Its only steadfast requirement is full sun: this is not a palm to use in semi shady or full shade conditions.
