Dutchman's pipe is a fast-growing vine from Brazil that can grow 15-20' tall with support. It has deeply heart-shaped, triangular leaves and large, oddly-shaped flowers that are really petalless calyces that open to 6" wide by nearly a foot long. The color is a purple-maroon backing that is netted with pink etching-like marks along veins and a yellow-orange throat. The vine is a host for several species of butterfly and thus a good plant to use for butterfly gardens and habitat gardens. Plants will bloom from spring through late summer.
This vine is a delight to grow: it is fast growing, tolerant of neglectful watering and lackadaisical care, but responds well to extra care by blooming more prolifically. It tolerates full sun but looks best when sited where it can get some afternoon shade. Heat and humidity are handled in stride. Because it is a twining vine, it needs a slender support for vertical growth -- it will not cling to flat surfaces on its own.
