Maypop is a fast growing perennial vine that uses tendrils to grab hold of adjacent shrubs, structure and other supports to lift itself to heights of 8-12'. The large, handsome, serrated leaves typically have three to five lobes and are arranged alternately along the stems, with flowers and branches emerging from the axil (the point where the leaf attaches to the stem).
All species of passion flowers have beautifully complex blossoms, and maypop is no exception. They are 2-3" in diameter and are composed of 10 white tepals arranged in a shallow bowl shape above which is arranged fringe of purple and white filaments, called the corona. In the center is the white fleshy stigma surrounded by five stamens. In South Florida the vine can bloom throughout the year but most often in spring and summer.
The name "maypop" comes from the fact that this vine is winter-hardy in cold winter climates, where it will die to the ground with the first frost, but then "pop" up in late april or early May, seemingly out of nowhere, to resume vigorous growth.
Maypop grows well in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It is tolerant of drought but will flower best with regular watering. Roots appreciate a loose mulch. This species is the hardiest of the passion flowers and is reliably winter hardy in all parts of Florida.
