Queen's wreath was introduced from tropical Central and South America to other tropical areas and is now widely grown throughout South Florida and the Caribbean. It forms a vigorous twining vine that will develop strong woody tissue and eventually reach 20-30' in length. The large leaves are a dull deep green and somewhat rough textured.
The beauty of queen's wreath becomes apparent when it flowers. In spring to early summer the plant absolutely erupts into a fountain of 12" long, semi-cascading clusters of small flowers. The true flowers are tiny, starlike, deep violet-blue blossoms. They are situated atop of larger, star-shaped, pale violet calyxes that last for a long time after the true flowers fade away. The overall effect looks somewhat similar to a wisteria. Situated over a porch, arbor or pergola, the floral display is unrivaled during its long spring season. There is sometimes a shorter burst of flowers in late summer to early fall. The plant is unparalleled for giving a rustic cottage-garden effect in tropical gardens where true wisteria will not grow.
As its name implies, the white version of queen's wreath trades the typical blue-violet flower color for pure white.
Queen's wreath grows best in full sun to part shade. It prefers moist soils, but once established, it may take heavy drought. The plant has no severe insect or disease problems. Mulch and use fertilizer for acid plants if your soil is alkaline, as petrea does prefer acidic soils.
Because the vine grows very large and heavy with time, this is not a vine to situate on a small or flimsy trellis. Give it a large porch or a large study arbor or pergola to climb over and ornament with its lovely flowers.
