Here is all the beauty of a tropical sunset in an easy-to-grow flowering vine. Hawaiian bell is related to morning glories and forms a sturdy perennial vine in South Florida, up to 12' tall. The plant is worth growing for the foliage alone: leaves are large, heart shaped, dark green with a handsome quilted texture. However, it is the flower that makes this plant a garden spectacle. The 2-3" wide, morning glory-shaped flowers are tricolored with vivid shades of fiery golden yellow, pale pink and iridescent cherry red -- all the colors of a tropical sunset. The flowers look as though they are lit from within due to the beautiful color gradients. These will bloom throughout the year, including winter, with a burst of flowers every few months and sporadic flowering in between the bursts.
This is a fast-growing vine that can cover a fence, trellis, or other structure within a single growing season. It blooms best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, although blooming may be reduced. The plant likes lots of water, especially if grown in full sun.
Hawaiian bell is a twining vine, so it needs a slender structure 3" or less in thickness to twine around, such as a fence, trellis, mesh netting, or arbor. It cannot cling to solid flat surfaces like walls on its own.
