Native to Mexico, this tender perennial vine can easily grow to 30-40' in length and uses tendrils to rapidly climb up and over any nearby object. Evergreen in frost-free areas, the coral vine has attractive green heart-shaped leaves. The vine produces large branching flower stalks upon which masses of small flowers are situated. The actual flowers are tiny but the sepals are larger and provide the brilliant color, which is shaded coral pink to white. Coral vine tends to bloom all year round in South Florida and other climates that experience a frost-free winter, but will bloom most heavily over a long period from spring through fall.
This adaptable vine will grow in almost any soil but prefers moist, well-drained soils. Full sun is needed for flowering. Coral vine is used to cover fences or climb trellises with fresh green foliage and a splash of bright color. It is also useful in urban gardens because it tolerates air pollution, restricted space and poor soil. This rampant grower does require adequate space to accommodate its eventual size, and is best used to cover a long section of fence or a large arbor or pergola. It will quickly outgrow small trellises.
Consumers should be aware that coral vine is listed as a somewhat invasive species in Florida and may spread throughout the garden by self-seeding.
