This is an exceedingly handsome and relatively fast growing tree fern that grows to 20' in South Florida and can spread 8-12'. The finely divided fronds rise out of the trunk and arch down as they get older. They are a bright, fresh spring green color with a filigree, airy texture. The foliage provides a wonderful contrast in color and texture to the many bold, dark green tropical plants that dominate South Florida gardens. Fuzzy brown and white scales cover the trunk and leaf stems. The "trunk" is very slender in proportion to the immense fronds and gives the entire plant a very feminine graceful appearance.
In South Florida, the Australian tree fern does best in partial to full shade; direct, hot sun will burn the leaves to a crisp. A filtered canopy of shade from large overhead trees such as live oak provides ideal shade. It enjoys the same shade conditions as the Licuala grandis palm and, like that other species, is best used as a accent in shade gardens, either singly or in odd-numbered groupings.
This plant's other major requirement is water: although it needs a very well drained soil (it will rot in permanently wet soils), Australian tree fern is very sensitive to drought and needs daily irrigation unless the weather is rainy. It does best in a very rich, organic soil with lots of compost and rotted manure incorporated.
