Mandevilla is a tender woody vine much beloved by gardeners in tropical climates. It provides a nonstop bounty of huge, trumpet-shaped flowers shown off against attractive, glossy, evergreen foliage. Mandevilla blooms heaviest in spring and summer and sporadically throughout the rest of the year. The vines are not overly aggressive; they twine to perhaps 10-15' and are suitable for modest sized trellises and residential lamp posts.
'Alice du Pont' is a popular hybrid variety that is larger, growing to 20', and has smaller oval shaped leaves. The large flowers swirl open from handsome pointed buds; they are a clear, fresh, bright pink color shaded to blush and yellow at the throat of the flower.
Given adequate care, mandevilla is pest free and fast growing. Full sun is best for flowering, although it will tolerate partial light shade. Some midday shade is appreciated in extremely hot desert climates. The plant needs adequate moisture, but can survive short droughts. It prefers well drained soil and does best if fertilized with liquid fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.
Mandevilla is moderately salt tolerant and can be planted behind the first line of dunes or similar protection in seaside landscapes.
